Ah, you guys. Chapter 6 is such a fun little chapter. I think it lets us get a little insight on what Finn is like—he lives in a Haven, which everyone is told is a safe place. But even living there, he doesn’t trust that it’s safe—he has safety precautions in place, escape routes and plans. Because he’s an untrusting bastard.
Chapter 7 is one of my favorite of this series. I think I love it because zombie action and seeing Finn fight. Which is always fun. But also because the interaction between Nurrin and Finn is awesome. I’m a sucker for good sparring, and they do that even in the middle of a zombie outbreak.
Chapter 8 and 9 are a lot of fun because we get to see what happens outside the Havens. Which matters a lot, because in the scope of things, Havens aren’t the whole world. They’re just a small window of the world.
Chapter 10 brings us to the Hole. Which I had a lot of fun with. It’s another of Finn’s defenses, a place to regroup. I like that while it’s a bolt hole, Finn doesn’t treat it as a destination. I also really enjoyed seeing Finn in his own space—his comfort level increased there, even while he got violent with Dustin. (Poor Dustin. Seriously that guy takes so much damage.)

My favorite lines:

“Scoot back, Nurrin. I’m not riding bitch on my own damn bike.”
His voice is different, subtly shut off, and I push myself to my feet. I don’t particularly want to be sitting here having a conversation with Finn O’Malley anyway.
As I turn away, his voice stops me. “What you did back there—Nurrin, that was stupid.”
“You could say thank you.”
He moves, catching my bare ankle in a vice-like grip. “I won’t thank you for putting yourself in danger.”

She was born the day the world ended…

Nurrin has lived her entire life with zombies—trapped behind walls meant to keep them safe. She’s mostly happy there. But when a zombie horde breech the walls of her Haven, she has to trust her brother, Collin, and his best friend to keep her alive.

He just wants his past to die…

Finn O’Malley has given up on voicing warnings that are ignored. No one cares that the zombies are changing. Now all that matters is keeping Collin and Nurrin safe from what’s outside the walls of a Haven. But when Nurrin’s best friend picks up a contact infection, he agrees to get the medicine needed to save his life. Forced together, relying on each other in a strange Haven, zombies aren’t the most dangerous thing they’re facing.
